The Coincidences Involving Rep. Don Young and Jack Abramoff Never End
Roll Call has a story today that raises serious questions about Rep. Don Young's intervention for Jack Abramoff's tribal clients.
Roll Call reported that Young sent two letters in September, 2002, benefitting Abramoff's tribal clients. They also reported that a few short weeks later, Young's PAC received several thousand dollars in contributions Abramoff's tribal clients.
But Fired Up! can now reveal new information that makes this a far more disturbing matter.
Here's a timeline that combines information from the Roll Call story, with information independently obtained by Fired Up! America:
| Date | Action |
| 07/22/02 | Email from Abramoff to Safavian regarding draft letter to be sent by members of Congress, including Young. |
| 7/25/2002 | Safavian email to Abramoff describing resistance within OMB to Abramoff's proposal. Safavian: "I suspect we'll end up having to bring some Hill pressure to bear on OMB." |
| 8/01/2002 | NewStar PAC1 contributes $2,500 to D. Young For Congress |
| 8/1/2002 | NewStar PAC contributes $5,000 to Midnight Sun PAC |
| 9/5/2002 | Young, along with LaTourette, writes GSA on behalf of Abramoff's client. |
| 10/17/2002 | Midnight Sun PAC received $7,000 from two of Abramoff's tribal clients. |
| 1/25/2006 | Rep. Young's spokesman tells Roll Call, this is all "a coincidence" and that Young has "no recollection" of how the letter came about, and that Young cannot ever recall meeting Abramoff personally. |
Maybe this will job the Congressman's memory, "Pay to the order of."
1. NewStar is a PAC controlled by Abramoff, and funded largely by the Hernan Franco family. The PAC has been used since 1997 to assist Abramoff with his efforts in lobbying for Puerto Rican statehood. Rep. Young and Midnight Sun PAC have been recipients of funding from this PAC on previous occasions as well.
