The NY Times has a major story today in which it spells out the flawed internal decision-making process early in the Iraq War.

The story makes very clear that the problems we have in Iraq today are the result of decisions made by Bush's team very early on.

Shorter version: Franks and Rumsfeld didn't need any advice because they thought they already had all the answers.

Shorterst version: Disaster.

Jack Carter Is A Man To Watch And To Listen To

Jack Carter, who is running for the United States Senate against John Ensign in Nevada, is a man worth keeping an eye on. Thus far the pundits aren't paying much attention, but I have a sneaking suspicion that as 2006 wears on, that is going to change.

Via AmericaBlog, I read this morning that the NY Times is reporting on a study that:

A secret Pentagon study has found that as many as 80 percent of the marines who have been killed in Iraq from wounds to the upper body could have survived if they had had extra body armor. Such armor has been available since 2003, but until recently the Pentagon has largely declined to supply it to troops despite calls from the field for additional protection, according to military officials.

Yesterday, President Bush met with some of the brightest minds in the U.S. foreign policy establishment in an attempt to bolster his credibility on the war in Iraq.

President Johnson tried the same thing. I wonder how that turned out for him?

LBJ met with the "wise men" Nov. 1, 1967 - all supported continuation of the war, except George Ball.
March 26, 1968 - The "Wise Men" gather at the White House for lunch with the President. They now advocate U.S. withdrawal from Vietnam, with only four of those present dissenting from that opinion.

Bush would have us excuse his administration's excesses in deference to the ''war on terror'' -- a war, it should be pointed out, that can never end. Terrorism is a tactic, an eventuality, not an opposition army or rogue nation. If we caught every person guilty of a terrorist act, we still wouldn't know where tomorrow's first-time terrorist will strike. Fighting terrorism is a bit like fighting infection -- even when it's beaten, you must continue the fight or it will strike again.

A friend of mine sent me this press release from Rep. Ike Skelton (D-Mo.), the ranking member of the House Armed Services Committee from September of 2002.

It is haunting how clearly Congressman Skelton perceived the dangers of the Bush administration strategy for Iraq.

Sometimes Even Republicans Actually Say What They Are Thinking--By Accident

In the midst of a vitriol-filled attack on Democrats during a Monday appearance on Fox News, Senator Orrin Hatch accidentally revealed more of his own thinking that he might have liked:

"The Democratic Party seems to be taken over by the Michael Moore contingent in their attitude toward Vietnam, and they continually call for a withdrawal of troops at a time when we haven't finished the job,"

As an aside, I have noticed that in recent weeks it has become the practice of Republicans, from the White House on down, to attribute the views of Michael Moore on Iraq to every Democrat, no matter what their actual thoughts might be.

Given that logic, I suspect to hear the GOP acknowledge any day that every single Republican shares the ethical and moral values of Duke Cunningham, Tom DeLay, Jack Abramoff, and Bill Frist.

A Curveball For The Bush Administration: LA Times Offers Further Proof Team Bush Misled America

This stunning piece from the LA Times just adds further proof to the argument that the Bush administration misled us into the Iraq war by manipulating intelligence. And the "Curveball" moniker appears that it will apply to this fiasco on several levels.

It's also the first time I remember Colin Powell speaking out directly. Maybe since he's now done it once, it will get easier for him. The time for him to be a loyal soldier is passed. He needs to do what is right for the country and speak the truth about what his former colleagues are doing to the country.

Woodward's Memory Springs To Life

The WaPo reports that Bob "I have a man crush on W" Woodward has suddenly remembered that he is a central figure in the Plame matter. Somehow, until now, he had previously overlooked that fact.

Perhaps his close ties to the Bush administration have enabled him to skirt FDA regulations and he has gotten his hands on some memory enhancing drugs. Not that you can believe what he says, but here is Woodward's statement.

Apparently, David Limbaugh believes the truth is like a well trained dog. If you play around enough with it, you can teach it to stand on its head.

The fear among the opinion elite of the right is so palpable, you can almost see David sweating as he banged out his latest column. In it, David attempts to turn virtue into vice and truth into fiction.
