The Press Helps The Right, Whether They Know It Or Not

Today's story in the Washington Post [1] is a case study in the difference between how the press deals with the Republicans and Democrats and how the "liberal media" helps the Republicans by making Democrats out to be a party with no principles.

Here's an example:

Major liberal groups accused Democratic senators yesterday of showing too little stomach for opposing John G. Roberts Jr.'s Supreme Court nomination, saying newly released documents indicate he is much more conservative than many people first thought.

The response was quick and pointed, as two key senators unleashed their sharpest criticisms yet of Roberts and sought to assure activists that the battle is far from over.

This language implies causation.  That the quick and pointed remarks about Roberts by Senators Leahy and Kennedy were based on the criticism by the major liberal groups and thus political rather than principled.

In fact, Leahy and Kennedy were responding to the release of thousands of documents containing Roberts' writings while at the White House and DOJ.

Leahy and Kennedy have a strong commitment to civil rights, voting rights, women's rights, privacy, and access to justice.  They want to know that members of the Supreme Court do too.

This story makes it sound like Leahy and Kennedy were reacting to pressure from liberal interest groups and caving to their pressure.  It seems that the media is penalizing Democrats for being fair-minded enough to wait to review Roberts record before making a judgment about him.  I know the press is used to the Bush administration where they don't do silly things like wait to see the facts, but perhaps the press should wait to see how this approach works before treating Democrats like sell-outs.

Senators Leahy and Kennedy were raising concerns because they are standing up for what they believe in; civil rights, voting rights, women's rights, privacy, and access to justice.  And by suggesting othwerwise, these reporters played right into the GOP's rhetoric about the Democrats as a party about politics, not principles.  So much for the liberal press bias.
