Submitted by Jeff Mazur on Fri, 08/26/2005 - 6:34pm.As Roy Temple summed up succinctly in a post earlier this week, a group of Republican Governors around the country have suffered this summer at the hands of hefty ethics deficits of their own creation. Govs. Taft of Ohio, Blunt of Missouri, Ehrlich of Maryland, Fletcher of Kentucky, and Schwarzenegger of Predator have all seen their own underhanded (and often illegal) financial and political tactics boomerang and cost them signifcant political capital.
K St. Extortion: The Rule, not the Exception
Submitted by Jeff Mazur on Wed, 08/03/2005 - 1:02pm.There may be no more incisive cultural portrait of today's Republican-controlled Washington than Wednesday's story in The Hill newspaper about Time Warner's hiring of a new D.C. Lobbyist.
According to the piece, "disquiet on the Hill" is the upshot of Time Warner's choice of Carol Melton to serve as the entertainment behemoth's top lobbyist. It appears that Melton, who previously served for a decade in Time Warner's legislative affairs shop and for eight years as Viacom's top legislative operative, is of insufficient GOP provenance to satsify unnamed "Republican leadership aides" who track such things as part of the infamous K Street Project.
